Wednesday Night Connect Classes - Winter

Light of the World 4th Session (Epiphany) January 8 only

The gospel of Matthew tells the story of the magi’s journey to visit Jesus and his family’s escape to Egypt which is the story we tell on Epiphany (January 6). This class will utilize Amy-Jill Levine’s book Light of the World to discuss the significance of this story as it connects to the Christmas narrative.
Facilitators: Rev. Brenda Kostner-Johnson brenda.kostner@gmail.com
and Rev. Jill Sander-Chali jill.sander-chali@collegehillumc.org

Embracing God’s Call: A Bible Study on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
(January 15-February 19)

The primary objective of this study is for people to gain a basic understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion through a Christian lens and its importance in our deeper theological understanding as participants in God’s redemptive work in the world. We’ll read scripture, learn DEI terms, get in touch with our senses, listen to each other’s stories and practice getting comfortable with discomfort. This class will use a curriculum from the General Commission on Religion and Race (United Methodist Church).

The Gospel of Mark: An Exploring Study (January 8-February 19)

How do you read the gospel of Mark, a book that was intended for a specific audience than our context? How do you contextualize its message to our time and social location? If you are interested in these questions, you are invited to join me and others as we explore some overarching themes in the gospel of Mark and how its message might speak to our current context and social location. You do not need to be an expert in biblical studies or theology to join us. Anyone, including those not from College Hill UMC, are invited to join us and learn together. Bring your Bible or plan on using one from CHUM during the study. In addition, bring your curiosity to engage in the interpretation of Mark’s gospel.
